I have been looking for a new computer and have found that a computer with a dual core 3.2 is about the same price as a core 2 duo 1.8. I have also read that the core 2 duo is about 30% faster than a dual core. Do they mean at the same clock speed? ie a core 2 due at 3.0 is 30% faster that a dual core at 3.0? Also does that mean that a dual core 3.2 is about as fast as a core 2 duo at 1.8?

If they are talking about price point then it doesn't seem to make a difference because you get the same performance for the dollar with both?

It is NOT just the FSB. They are faster because they have a better IPC, if you wanna read about that go here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instructions_Per_Cycle, otherwise take my word for it, it is important. A Core 2 Duo at 1.8Ghz will be easily faster than a Pentium D at 3.2Ghz, at anything.

First WTF about get a Dell person is wondering about chips. The reason the 30% faster is the FSB is higher. You can have the 3.2 do things faster as in decode a dvd or older gaming. It matters the test to be honest. I have both Intel Duo and Dual the 3.0 is faster on dvdshrink then the Duo 2.4 and teh duo system had more ram. And yes everything else was the same. Just really matters the programs you are running and harddrive setups. If you want something really fast have little programs, windows, and virus scan on one hard drive. The cool stuff on another hard drive. So you can type and listen to songs or whatever without many issues. Dell does decent systems and so does www.abs.com but to get some good deals checkout: http://bensbargains.net/index.php will have rebates, but for the fastest and best system for the money build your own or get a nice one off ebay if you can not get it any cheaper with the site.

30 percent faster is 30 percent faster.
Of course, cpu performance is only part of the problem. What about disk access speed? Graphics speed. Got enough memory?
