The person running the ball is called the running back. The person trying to catch the ball is a receiver.

However, a running back can be a fullback or a tailback. But generically, he is a running back.

I am not picking on you in anyway, but you might want to stop by Borders or a bookstore and get or read a little of "Football for Dummies" I don't know if that book exisits, but I don't know why it wouldn't!

Good luck with your paper!

Wide reciever generally catches the ball to score.

Running back generally gets the ball passed to him so he can run it in.

Edit - not quite sure about the thumbs down .. I've been around football my entire life .. haha .. my brother plays, my dad played in college and now coaches, my husband plays, I would have played but I did cheer instead :-)

A ball carrier who takes a handoff usually is a "running back". The guy who catches the ball has more vocabulary, such as wide receiver, split end, wideout and flanker.

The "edgy" terms refer to the positions on the line these faster players line up into. The "back" is usually well behind the line where the ball is put into play.

Here's your football primer. The quarterback receives the ball from the center. He can than hand the football to a running back, who can run with the ball. The quarterback can also pass the football to a wide receiver, who can then catch and run with the ball.

Run - running back or half back (interchangable)

Pass - wide receivers are on the outside and run way down the field. Tight ends are the guys who are crouched up with the offensive line and try to catch short passes.

Hope you get an A!
