i just recently bought a new laptop with the following specs:
intel core 2 duo T 7300 2.0 ghz
2 gb RAM
Nvidia 8600 GMT
120 GB 5400 rpm ghard drive
it's a vostro and i should be able to play most games; however when i play half life 2 my computer gets really hot and starts making all this noise and sometimes the game freezes. No it's not the problem with my hardware because even the game itself is recommending my system to the highest possible video settings and my computer has a 5.3 on the vista scoring index thingy. So is it safe for me to continue playing?

My opinion is that you have to find out about the heat issue.

Heat does some really funny things to electronics and electronic hardware and it may just be what's causing your glitchy operation while playing games.

I would guess that the noise you are hearing is coming either from your hard drive, or the CPU fan. Frequently if these get hot the bearings begin to make noise and they will begin to wear more heavily from the heat.

Try putting your ear to the noisy area and see if you can determine if its coming from the area of the CPU fan or from the hard drive. Your pc's manual should depict those areas for you.

In either case, you need to find a way to dissapate that heat with either a better CPU fan or a laptop cool plate that you sit it on. Not sure the "cool plate" works that well, as I'm not a laptop fan.

Hope this helps.

yeah it is hardware, but not in the sense of not being able to handle the game.

Its probably Vista conflicting with steam and causing the issue with the hardware.

Oh and by the way, the rating system on Vista is in no way shape or form any useful insight to a computer. Its a terrible rating system thats not accurate. You want better, go to futuremarks website and Download and run 3Dmark 06

Sounds like cooling issue to me. Most laptops get pretty hot when the air vents are blocked. Try to make sure that you are using it on a table an not your lap or a soft surface because the vents on the bottom could be blocked. You might also want to get one of the targus cooling pads. They are pretty loud though.

Upgrade your cooling, and make sure you apply the correct amount of thermal grease to your chip fan.
