I would vote for an atheist candidate (not just because he or she was an atheist, of course). But still, I doubt it. A recent survey done at the University of Minnesota found that atheists are the "least trusted minority" in America, meaning they are the people who are least likely to get elected to public office, and who Americans are least likely to allow their children to marry. Silly, right?
Actually, it kind of makes sense. If the majority of the population truly believes that their morality comes from a book (which they do), then it stands to reason that they don't trust others who admit that their morality doesn't come from a book. To me, that's the biggest hurdle for believers to overcome: where does an atheist's morality and, therefore, their political ideals come from?

Because this country was founded on Christian values, and the Constitution was written with God at the center of it. It’s not a coincidence that every president has been Christian. Since they are always amending and changing things though, I wouldn't be surprised if down the line, we have an atheistic president because they are constantly removing God from things. The US will go straight to hell in a hand basket. I imagine an atheistic president "making peace" and "calling a truce" with Osama Bin Laden because he doesn't understand the "spirituality" behind it all--the fact that they hate us because we are Christians and that we don't accept their radical ways. They don't hate us so much, they hate Christ. Therefore, if we had a atheistic president, he would just side with the enemy and allow radical “Islam” to take over and destroy the entire western world. I note that I have nothing against Islam. It’s the crazy, radical ones I have a problem with--you know, the ones who blew up the World Trade Centers in the name of "God".

I hope we do, not saying that they're so much different, but it will be interesting to see an atheist president after so much Christian presidents, I mean just how different they will do some things, its important for presidents to believe in God in America is because most people see that if you don't believe in him then something will be wrong in the way you run our country, but hopefully when Generation Y takes a hold of the workforce in our nation things will change drastically.

It's not likely while the vast majority of American voters believe in God. Most believers are suspicious of atheists.
America has a tradition of belief in God ... swearing in on a bible ... "one nation under God" ..."in God we trust", etc.
They would chafe tradition and popular American culture.
I'll amend that to not a snow ball's chance in hell or for God's sake, get real.

Hopefully yes. America needs to return to it's position as a world leader in a moral and ethical sense. Hard to achieve that when ignorance in the form of religion occupies the white house.

Eventually.
Since there is such a divide between a president's religious faith and his position, I could see an atheist working his way into office.
Now I doubt that we will have a radical atheist, seeking to ostracize religions and such, abolishing or outlawing religion.

Not anytime soon. People don't like it when you don't share their imaginary friend. Hopefully Americans will get more rational in the future.
