The words are closely related but not exactly the same. Prejudice means to place preconceived judgment on a person, place or thing without having intimate knowledge of the particular person, place or thing. One can be prejudiced against anyone or anything... blondes, brunettes, the government, Disney World, etc.

Racism refers to the hatred/intense dislike of a particular race of people, based solely on the color of their skin.

some people were close but not quite correct; prejudice is not a favoritism for something over something else, so much as a negative attitude towards something...

To use one of the examples given, it was that they are prejudiced in that they prefer Chcoloate over Vanilla. You would not be prejudiced in that you like Chocolate more than Vanilla, you would be prejudiced against Vanilla, and thus prefer Chocolate. It is similar, but not the same. it is a different cause, with same effect.

Racism is merely a specific form of prejudice.

In terms of racism it would be similar; for example assume you have several white people and several black people applying for a job. If you hired someone who is white; it does not make you racist against blacks; unless you hired the white person based on the fact that they are not black.

everyone has prejudices, but not everyone is racist.

prejudices are shortcuts that we all use to analyze a person or situation. historically, this was (and still is) a survival tactic. we prejudge that a dark alley in a city is dangerous, so we don't go there. we don't have to experience the situation, we can use our previous knowledge or experience to quickly evaluate the situation. but, the alley may be safe and perhaps you wouldn't have come to harm anyway. this illustrates that stereotypes can save us time, but can also be wrong or based on bad information. you don't have to get bitten by a rattlesnake to determine that an encounter is a dangerous situation. you can use your previous knowledge and the experiences of others to prejudge the snake.

racism is a type of prejudice based specifically on race. again, these judgements help us to save time in social situations, but again they can be wrong or flawed since each person brings a different set of experiences and knowledge to the situation.

I think a prejudice is having a preconceived opinion or judgment about someone or something different from you. And a racist is having a feeling that you are superior to a certain race.

Do you mean correct definitions or the ones used by the Liberals?
Prejudiced means simply preferring one object/idea over another. E.g., I prefer CHOCOLATE ice cream to vanilla!
Racist means treating people differently based upon skin color (it has nothing to do with sex, national origin, social status, etc., as often used on Y! and in the media. E.g., a white person can not be racist in re Jews!
As used in the media, prejudiced and racist are basically the same, treating people differently based on differences (religion, sex, national origin) although racist is supposed to be in regard to a person's alleged skin color (some whites are darker than some blacks, for instance, yet they are still considered according to the skin color of "their people".

Prejudice could be described as a kind of favoritism. You can like one more than another; treat one better than the other; judge one to be better than another, and this reveals prejudice. Racism is an overt or outward effort to exclude, deny rights to, and even attempt to do harm to people whom one has no knowledge of other than a perceived difference in race, ethnicity or culture

Simply put, prejudice is the thought pattern-don't like minorities because they are lazy, for example. It does not become racism until you put that thought pattern into action-won't rent an apartment to minorties because you feel that they are lazy.
