Mare or Maris is a latin word for 'sea', as in large body of water. Through a telescope, Marias look like oceans or seas -- large flat areas with contrasting solid color (to the areas surrounding the maria), and without many visible large craters.

Well, they didn't like Maria all that much, so they referred to her as being "coarse."
