The father of Centaurs was Centaurus, who was held in disrepute by both men and gods. Some accounts claim that he was the son of Apollo and Stilbe but, the more interesting accounts say he was fathered by Ixion. He gave birth to the race of Centaurs by mating with Magnesian mares.

Centaurus (human) was the son of the King of Thessaly, Ixion, and Nephele. Centaurus founded the Centaurs via his relationships with many of his father's mares. Ixion was bound to a wheel and lashed with serpents by order of Zeus for being the "first murderer" by murdering his father-in-law. Centaurus was never punished for his strange dalliances.

That was Ixion. He had the audacity to chase after Hera (Zeus's wife). Zeus set up a trap for him, though, by making a cloud that looked exactly like her. Whoops!
