The type of numbness you are describing is usually caused by peroneal nerve entrapment, where something is putting pressure on the nerve, or by overworking muscles that expand to a volume larger than the sheath that encloses them (lateral compartment syndrome).

If the problem starts during exercise and goes away soon after stopping, its probably compartment syndrome. If the pain and numbness continue for hours or days after exercising, its probably caused by nerve entrapment.
