Wow, all these negative comments....I really don't think it's that bad. I agree he will have a lot of people asking him if that's his real name but so what! It takes one second to say "yes" and if they push it, he just has to show his ID...what's the big deal??? Honestly, I think it would be entertaining to have so many people doubting my name, rather than it being annoying. And as far as his professional life goes, hey, it'll always give him an opening line at interviews! A perfect ice breaker...What's so bad about that? He can either match his name with his personality or completely break free of his stereotyped name and either way, his life will go on. A name does not hold you back from being successful, it's the person you are. Besides, maybe I can't picture a president with that name, but I can certainly picture some hip, successful CEO by that name....Surfer...I like it ;)

So many people with nasty answers.....If this is the name you like then name your son Surfer. This is your child and you get the joy of naming them.

I would have to agree that maybe when he grows up he will have a hard time with the name, so I would suggest using Surfer as his middle name and having another first name. I know alot of people who actually go by there middle name in life, but then if any complications arise from it he always has his more simple first name to fall back on.

And for all the people who say that no one will believe that is his real name when getting a job, all he has to do is show his ID card and social security card to prove it, it won't be that hard to believe. And if someone denies him a job position becuase of his name, then that is discrimination and against the law.

No. Naming your child isn't about giving them a "cute" or "cool" name. Don't forget they're going to have to carry this name their whole life. Do you think a boy named Surfer is going to have an easy time getting a serious career? He will be a laughingstock.
Thank goodness you're not a mom and will most likely come to your senses before then.

Well, it is different. But it would look like a joke on a resume or job application. And what if he's not an athlete at all. What if he's a book worm or turns out to be the next Bill Gates. Then his name would really seem like a joke. Can you imagine US President Surfer? Aim higher for your child than that. You'll put him at an automatic disadvantage.

Well it is a different name. Since I was a teenager I always wanted to name my daughter Bernadette thinking it sounded so beautiful. 14 years later I got pregnant and then you really think seriously about it. I couldn't pull myself to put a nick name like Bernie on a little girl. So I went with something completely different.

Sorry, I don't really care for it. I think it's an adorable nick-name, but, seriously, can you imagine him applying for a job with the name Surfer? It's a harsh world out there, better make your child prepared.

I think its cool.
Why not, with names like Chester (chest) and Dick (self explanatory) and John (prostitues escorts), Peter (penis) these names all have double meanings. Then you have names like Apple, Coco, etc.

I think Surfer is a cooler than all the names listed above (tho I do like Coco too).

I guess the name could work here in South Africa or in Australia where they surf all the time. Its a little different like never heard it before but sure why not if u like it then I don't see a problem in it.

Surfer isn't a name. It's not "cute".

Even if it was, I doubt a grown man would want a "cute" name, anyway.
