The coaches have to relay signals from the sidelines to their captains on both offense and defense to get in proper alignments with the personnel playing. It is illegal in the NFL for opposing teams to videotape them.
However, if an active defensive player at any level is able to decipher a quarterback's audible at the line during a game, that is legal.

On defense, plays are called on every down just like on offense. On offense, the coaches talk to the QB through a speaker in his helmet. Defensive players receive their play calls from the sideline. Typically, the defensive coordinator is the one signaling the play call and he will use a variety of creative motions (like a baseball manager) that everyone can see but no one other than his team can interpret. So, if a team were to tape these signals and see what plays the defense ran after each one, they could figure out how to exploit the defense and call a play to the QB.
For example, lets say the defense calls several blitzing linebackers to attack the QB. The team "stealing signals" notices this and the QB audibles a new play to adjust. The cheating offense scores a touchdown when the defense probably would have gotten a sack if they had had the element of surprise.
Football play calling is all about surprise and deception.

Signal-stealing would have a big impact on the game - Nimrod... You would be able to decipher signals for the 2nd-half & especially in all rematch games (i.e.: playoffs). If the allegations are true, then - yes, they're low-down dirty cheaters. I for one, (if again the allegations are true) believe if Bonds gets an asterisk without ever actually being caught - the Pats Super Bowl wins should also get an asterisks!!! I don't think they can take away the rings - what's done is done - but definitely asterisks, plus they should lose a bunch of draft picks... How much easier would your play-calling & especially audible calling be if you new what package the defense is in? I really don't see much of a difference - cheating is cheating & the Pats are too good to lower themselves to that level, but if they did - that's dispicable! SAD 'n' SHADY - SAD 'n' SHADY...

means the Jets are a bunch of crying fools. If the Patriots really wanted to steal signals (which would have been clearly visible from THEIR OWN SIDELINE) all they would have to do is put the guy ON THEIR OWN SIDELINE with a telephoto lens.
