My list:

1. American History X
2. Fight Club *
3. Lord of The Rings
4. Shawshank Redemption
5. A Christmas Story
6. Home Alone
7. Saving Private Ryan
8. Apacolypse Now
9. American Bueaty
10. Gone with the Wind
11. 2001 A Space Odyssey
12. To kill a mockingbird
13. Back to the Future

I put a * by Fight Club because most films buffs won't include it. But look at the "Euro" movies that delve into European life. Fight Club is the American version of that. It dives into the anals of American culture for good or bad. A great story that is vastly underated for its theme, plot and story due to its graphic content.

I have not seen a movie since 1982.
I do not believe any movies is "required viewing".
I do not believe any book is "required reading".
If you have a teacher or professor that makes it such, then for your grade you must abide by the wish of that person.

I believe there are some "suggested movies, books, etc.".

This is my help from Washington, D.C. USA.
