The easiest way to save a document in plain text is to use the Window's program Notepad. Simply click Start, then Run, then type 'notepad' (without the quotes) and hit enter. Copy and paste your resume into notepad (Ctrl+C = copy, Ctrl+v = paste) and then click File > Save in notepad to save your resume in plain text. Note that all your formatting (font, bold/italics, etc) do not carry over in plain text.

"danstevens" has the best answer for you. Basically "plain text" is a text file without formatting. NotePad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->NotePad) is an application that does not use any formatting (font, color, style, size, etc...).
In MS Word, the output files are stored with a lot of additional information that is not exactly human readable (binary or in XML format depending on how exactly you save the file). You can do a "Save As" from most applications to output an ASCII or Plain Text file as well.
No matter how you get it to a plain text file, you will lose all formatting except line breaks. If you are sending out resumes I would recommend saving both a document format and a plain text format so you can easily send your resume out. For the plain text one, you'll probably want to convert any bullets to "-" and use multiple instead of or other indent formatting.
Just select all the text from your document and paste it into NotePad and you'll have to manually cleanup the file to add some semblence of formatting to it.

Hopefully you are not applying to be an administrative assistant. Anyway, plain text means minus all the formatting that is Word or Works specific in the document. This means all that time you put into your resume to make it POP will not be there. Like those animated fonts, marching ant, etc. Export it over to notepad, review and save it there as a *.TXT file. They should be able to read it fine after that.

You can save the file with a *.txt option.
You can copy and paste the entire resume in notepad and save it as a text file. Plain Text is a text file without much formatting. It opens with all packages and browsers.
You can also download OpenOffice software from the net. This has a word processor which allows you to save your docs in the latest word format.
If you have an email account with gmail, go to the google docs option. Upload your resume. Edit it and save it in word version.
Hope that helps.

It sounds like you're not doing it right. I presume you're trying to email the resume. Since businesses tend to stick to MS office, and do not want a resume in plain text, your best bet is to save the resume as an RTF file (rich text format) and send it as an attachment to your email.
RTF files can be opened by Word, Works, Wordpad (comes with Windows), and just about any other word processor worth anything.
The fact that you are saying it has to be plain text makes me think the problem is with your email client, not your word processor.
Edit: LOL... I'm getting thumbs down for suggesting a document format that will allow formatting and just about any word processor to open.
Oh well, fine, send it as plain text. Good luck getting the job. You might save yourself some time by writing it out by hand in crayon and using snail mail.

when you save the file in the drop down list at the bottom choose plain text or rich text format instead of .doc file type. that way the file can be opened with normal text programs

are you sending it as an attachment? if so it shouldn't matter, if your pasting it in the message body, you can switch to plain text, there should be an option on the message toolbar
