So, I have a Dell Latitude D600 and its hard drive failed 2 weeks after the warranty ran out (go figure). I was just wondering if I could use one of my external hard drives as a primary hard drive, and how to go about doing so.

I have a bunch of external USB 2.0 drives. Please give me some sources so that I can have a DETAILED explaination of how I could go about installing a new hard drive (either external or internal) for my notebook.

Power ON then press Del or F2 to enter BIOS menu. Look for the option to boot from a USB HDD. Enable it, save and exit. BUT do take note that USB interface is much slower than internal PATA or SATA interface. Expect more than double the boot time.

I know that Windows XP can be booted from an external hard drive, and I read that the T30 can boot from USB. Check out the site listed in my sources to see a guide. Good luck!

Most external hard drives are bigger than a laptop hard drive, if you mean installing it into the laptop. You can boot from an external hard drive if you change the bios boot sequence and then change the jumper settings in the external hard drive as master and not slave.

If the BIOS allows you to boot from an external device, yes. It's no different than booting from a CD.

your computer must be able to recognize the ext. HD in BIOS and able to boot from it. Installing an OS to an external HD is not easy.

well u can, but u must install the OS on that HDD first from other PC, then connect it to ur laptop, boot it, and choose ur external USB device as primary HDD from the setup, or change the boot order for ur HDD to be the 1st

SWITCH TO THE BEST OPERATING SYSTEM MY FRIEND -
MAC OSX AND YOU'LL LIVE FUTURE OF COMPUTING TODAY
in mac osx you keep ctr key pressed down during booting and you can boot from ANY drive
because microsoft uses their "research" department just to copy osx you'll probably be able to do that in NEXT version of microsoft windows

Not if it is USB or Firewire, which it probably is. BIOS configurations do not give you the option to boot to an external drive using USB or Firewire.

If it shows up in your BIOS boot menu then you should be fine. Just put it on top the list
