If you have seen the film please help I am so confused. Have just watched it. How really does Jack die? His wife says about a tyre hitting him...but there is an awful clip of him being beaten up? Why? Please! And what relevance does that random guy have who offers to take him to the cabin ? I am probably just being silly but I really won't sleep if I don't know.....PLEASE

On another camping trip in the mountains in 1983 the two men talk about their lives since they last met: Ennis has been dating a waitress named Cassie Cartwright (Linda Cardellini), while Jack says he's been seeing the wife of a ranch foreman (however, we were shown in an earlier scene that Jack was involved with the foreman himself)

Months later, a postcard Ennis sent to Jack about their upcoming meeting in November is returned to Ennis in the mail stamped "Deceased." In a strained telephone conversation, Jack's wife Lureen tells a stunned Ennis that Jack died in an accident while changing a tire that exploded. While she explains the injuries that were inflicted, Ennis fearfully pictures, instead, Jack being beaten to death by a gang of homophobic men. Lureen tells Ennis that Jack had wished to have his ashes scattered on Brokeback Mountain, but she didn't know where that was. She tells Ennis that half of Jack's ashes were interred in Texas and that she sent the other half to Jack's parents. Ennis explains to Lureen the significance of Brokeback Mountain, possibly bringing her to a quiet revelation of the real purpose behind her late husband's fishing trips. She then suggests that Ennis contact Jack's parents about carrying out Jack's wishes.

The wife killed her husband because she knew about his gay love affair. Hince the awful clip of him getting beaten to death. She just told the guy about the tyre/tire thing to cover her tracks. That is why she shed a few tears because she was hurt that it had to come to that. The relevance about cabin boy is really nothing. He knew the guy was gay and wanted to have sex with him in the cabin.

In the story it hints that he was actually beaten... that Ennis hears the truth in her voice, basically that she told someone and he was killed.. they don't really give you the whole story..
