Well I can't say for sure what your co-workers mean when they use the term. But from my knowledge people usually use that term when referring to a person who 'disses' their own race. Does the girl sit at the table with the white people when she eats lunch? Does she socialize mainly with the white people? Does she usually ignore or turn her nose up to the blacks that she works with? If so, this could be why they label her an 'oreo' In my opinion, regardless of how a person may act, or how they may want to be. When they look in the mirror they only see white or black. And regardless of how a black or white person may act, you are still and always will be who you are. PERIOD!!!

There is no such thing as "acting black" or "acting white"... Many cultures have a name for behavior of ignoring or not speaking to people who look like you or by putting them down when you are with the dominant group...My friends from India say "coconuts" and so on...(my Chinese, Latino, and Vietnamese friends also have terms which I cannot remember now...) Don't be so racist to assume that "thuggish and ghetto" is how African Americans act... They are referring to someone from their own group disrespects and disregards them, because of her own low racial and cultural self esteem...

White people typically have more refined mannerisms and vernacular. They are also possessed of an entirely different lexicon than what is typically used by African Americans. Basically, any black person that is not all thugged out and ghetto, isn't part of the stereotype that some people have about blacks. She's behaving like any well mannered person would, it's just that she is black, so no one expects her to be this way. Stereotypes really suck, don't they?

There is no such thing as acting "black" or "white". Anyone who says differently is just plain ignorant. There are plenty of non-black people who act ghetto. There are plenty of non-white people who use proper grammar. People in general need to pull their heads out of their butts and stop labeling and stereotyping.

I have no idea. My brother, who is 37, follows all new trends that come out and since rap hit the streets he's been acting black.

I don't have a clue. I've never heard either of those terms. But they don't sound very nice. I hate racial slurs of any kind.

i guess if you don't act the way sterotypes of blacks act, then you're acting white.
i am hispanic. i love the arts, politics, etc. i don't like beans, dancing at family parties, etc, and they call me white.

well i think that they mean her manors and stuff more like that. black women tend to have a bit more "attitude" then other women. i dont think it is a specific thing but you can see the way different races act.
