I live in Texas and skunks are common roadkill. If you get a close direct smell of a skunk, even a dead one, the smell is so strong it will burn your eyes and nose. It has a very deep musky, kinda sour, acidic smell. Tomato juice does help, but you can combine it with a skunk deodorizer. Recipe as follows:
Skunk Deodorizer 1 Qt. of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda (not baking powder)
1 Tsp. Liquid Dish Soap

Skunk scent is a musk like smell, and the chemicals can really burn or irritate a dog's eyes if it gets in them. Tomato juice really does work to kill the odor, but as an alternate, I have found that a solution of plain white ( NOT apple cider) vinegar and water works very well as an odor destroyer for this. Just use equal parts of both liquids, and make sure that you rinse well and use regular shampoo on your dog afterwards. There is also a product on the market called Nature's Miracle, which is useful in getting rid of odors on surfaces such as floors, carpets, and bedding. I have used this with my own animals with great success. Good luck, I hope this helps.

my friends and their dogs have been sprayed. everyone had to take several tomato baths for a week. it smells like burnt rubber,or something similiar to an electrical fire. its not the worst smell in the world as some may have you believe. you can smell skunks from a mile away. MYTHBUSTERS IS A JOKE. TOMATO BATH IS THE BEST AND ONLY CURE. THE ACID IN THE TOMS HELP TO BREAK DOWN WHATEVER IS IN THE SKUNK JUICE.

According to the Myth Busters, tomato juice worked the best out of all the ways to get rid of the smell. As far as what it smells like.....have you ever smelled a garbage can that has that "trash juice" in the bottom. Add rotten eggs to that and you have a good idea what it smells like.

When its really strong it smells almost like onions. And according to MythBusters it wasn't tomato juice it was a mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda (2 bottles to 1/3 a cup). I add some dish soap so it suds up. Leave it on for at least 10 minutes and rinse. Works wonders. MythBusters even tried expensive OTC stuff and the baking soda mix worked better.

There are several levels of the scent of skunk spray. My dogs have been sprayed several times and its BAD. Tomato juice totally works but, I had to pour the juice on them and rub it in several times, letting it soak.
One thing to note, if dogs get sprayed in the face, getting the scent out of his nose, ears and mouth is not easy and will just have to fade, in a few weeks. I know you aren't a dog but, I hope this helps.
