I'd say LSU, simply because they handled their first opponent and they handled VT extremely well.
USC, like several other teams, have only played "scrubs" and have not faced a real opponent. So, again, I say LSU.
I'm not sure how tough USC's schedule is, but the Buckeyes played the #2 team 3 times the same season, and yes, lost to the #2 team in the bowl game. However, they also played several ranked teams during their drive to the big game, who does USC play?

There is no way to really tell. The Polls at this juncture are just to sell newspapers. You must wait until several games have been played. We really do not know how good Virginia Tech is. This week LSU plays a patsy -Middle Tennessee-so that will not help. The Tigers will probably run up the score but that will not truly tell, it only impressed some when they read it on Sunday morning. USC played nearly everybody against Idaho. They looked a big raggedy to me. So this weekend we will know far more about USC after the have played Nebraska in Lincoln. So I am going to withhold judgment until more games have been played.

Based ONLY on the games played, and having NOTHING to do with strength of schedule, etc....App State! They played as hard as any team in the BCS championship game has ever played. That was a HELL of a win for them, and they deserve to enjoy their success, however short lived it may be.
OU (sorry, soonergirl) is possibly the most OVERRATED AND EXAGGERATED team at this point. Just because you can run up the score on a bunch of high school coaches and look decent against another sh*tty team doesn't mean you are the "mini NFL" again.
USC & LSU, as usual, look like the champs they are. I am hopeful one of these teams will kick OU's self righteous ***!

Too early to tell. It is just based on speculation, look at all the "upsets" so far this year. Unless there is some sort of playoff system in place it really doesn't matter to me. BTW I'm an Arkansas fan. We moved up two spots without playing Saturday. If I had to pick I'd go w/ LSU.

LSU without Question, USC has played only one game and that was against a week team. While LSU knocked off a top ten ranked opponent very easily.

Not USC, I don't understand how they are ranked #1 when they didn't play last weekend, they should have dropped a few spots. But these polls are meaningless until at least mid-season. Even though, the past two years the Bull Crap System hasn't really worked at the end, either.

As a Tennessee fan, I can safely say we are not #1. But after watching the UT/Calif game I can safely say that Calif has four of the fastest running backs and return guys in the country. They will be hard to stop. They have the talent to wind up #1.

I'm not one of their fans, but after watching Oklahoma roll over the Miami Hurricanes the way they did, barring any injuries in future games, right now they look very sharp, and very capable of beating anyone including LSU, and USC.

If you base it on "at this point" you just open the doors to 50 teams. Ask this question after week 5.

USC
And I'm not a fan
But, I believe that the first poll of the season should not be until Oct. 1. That keeps pretenders like Michigan from debuting at #5.
