The word terrorist makes this into a difficult question because the result determines whether a group is terrorists, freedom fighters, explorers, or something else. Here are a few examples that could be used:
The abolitionist John Brown was terrorist. His group attacked slave owners (legal at the time) killing many and burning property and "stealing" slaves. His actions helped fuel the differences between the North and South and partly led to the Civil War. His anti-slavery ideas ultimately prevailed.
The buffalo hunters of the late 1800s in the US that killed thousands of buffalo with the single intention of wiping out the food supply of the American Indians so they would have to submit to "white" rule. They terrorist campaign was successful.

The ANC were not a terrorist group--except to white racists. They did not, as a matter of general practice, use terrorist tactics--although the white South African government did so routinelly.
But to answer your question--the anti-colonialst fighters in Algeria (1950s) used terrism as a tactic against the French and succeeded in forcing the French out and gaining independance.

Every revolution starts with a bunch of terrorists who have had enough and stick it to the enemy. The only reason why we don't refer to our own founding fathers as terrorists is that they won their struggle (largely due to a French king who couldn't see his own demise and a change in the consciousness of man). I still think Lenin was a terrorist, but the Soviets say he wasn't - who you gonna believe?

Since Bush has unilaterally declared the whole Iranian military as terrorists, then any military fits under the new definition.
Two that come to mind is the Vietcong and the PLA.
(it just boggles the mind what comes out of the WH to justify how much more they want to screw the world)

Another place is Southern Lebanon where Hezbollah governs it with full power. They converted it into a police state and as a buffer zone for attacking the jewish state. The useless Lebanese government cannot imposed its authority in that territory because Hezbollah are backed by Syria and Iran.

i suppose if you consider the IRA and Sein Fein terrorist groups. they were quite successful. after decades of fighting in N. Ireland, the British consented to holding open elections for each county in Ireland to allow the people to vote on whether or not to remain in the UK or be granted independence.
30 out of 36 counties voted for their independence, and the free state of Ireland was born.

Some British colonists pulled it off back in the late 18th Century. To the British, they were terrorists. To us, they were the founding fathers of the United States.
