I was watching the 49ers on Monday night and I was unimpressed with the lack of Offensive production by the 49ers. I am wondering if it is because of:

1) Arizona's improved defense
2)The 49ers Offensive coordinator's poor play callings
3)Because Alex Smith will never live up to his billing

I've seen him make some terrible throws last night. He did look impressive on the final drive, however, he was really shaky all night long.

In the first 2 preseason games he looked like a new QB. However, since then he looks like the same guy from last year. Rex Grossman is a good example of how far a mediocre QB can get you.

Do you think Alex Smith will get any better or will he continue to be a mediocre quarterback?

take it from a guy who knows the 49ers. alex smith is the real deal. its not an accident that his 2nd yr jump was the highest in NFL history. he will continue to improve. of course, people who dont know anything about the 9ers will say he is a bust. but they dont know that smith has had 3 different OCs in 3 years. mccarthy, turner, and now hostler. do you know how difficult it is for a young rookie QB to have 3 different people telling him different things every year? the other thing is that the cardinals blitzed almost every down, which gave smith no chance to make an accurate throw and they couldnt get the run game going either due to the blitz. lastly, the play calling was not too great. all these factors combine in making other people around the nation think smith is a bad QB when he really isnt. trust me, he will continue to get better, he has shown that with the last drive in yesterdays game.

It was play calling, I was screaming at the TV last night wondering why the 49ers kept running to the right side of the line when you have Jennings and Larry Allen on the left you need to run the ball behind them and just pound it. I think that after they watch film they will see where they went wrong and correct it. Arizona's D was ok, I think that when you watch that 4th and 2 scramble in the 4th quarter (a-la Joe Montana/Steve Young) thats the play where Alex Smith grew up. He made some great passes that were dropped too, and he didn't throw any interceptions. Once they establish the run with better play-calling Alex will be the next great QB.

He has the potential to be a great quarter back, but right now he is not stepping up and taking control of the offense. He needs to pull a Jim McMahon every once in a while and change the play in the huddle. He is smart enough to know what will work, but he needs to step up and become the leader he can be. Thats basically what happened in college, but Urban motivated him to step it up. Just my opinion, and I hate Alex Smith, but love the 49ers, so I have to love Alex Smith.

Alex Smith will improve every game. He has talent, and has plenty of talent around him. I do think that Arizona's defense is greatly improved over last year as is San Fran's. How come no similar question about Leinart? He looked the same as Smith. I also contribute it to 1st game (regular season) jitters, and a little bit with the play calling.

i think that he will be a good quarterback in the future, but it will take some time. he's going from an Urban Meyer style of offensive to a Mike Nolan, NFL style offense. it's a little more in depth to your normal college offensive playbook. when they give him some quality wide receivers and a proven offensive line, he'll be ok. it's just the first game of the season, give him a break. by the way, it's unfair to compare him to rex grossman. he is the definition of inconsistancey

Alex Smith had busy feet and didnt look too comfortable, the Oline didnt do too well with the blitz either.

Smith is still the youngest starting QB in the league and its his third year. He will get better, look at how Drew Breese started out.

Alex Smith is young, inexperienced, and lacks confidence. Look for him to steadily improve over this and next season. Eventually he will be a great QB but most likely not a Carson Palmer or Peyton Manning.

Yeah, cuz Frank Gore can shoulder the load and Alex Smith doesn't have to do too much. Ala Philip Rivers in San Diego

I know a win is a win, but DAMN!!!

After last night I honestly don't know if he'll ever be any good....He was freakin wild last night, terrible game all round. The play calls didn't help him either, they called some of the worst plays ever, absolutely horrendous!!!! And it was on Monday Night no less...oh man!!

The Cards, D was pretty solid, so yeah give them credit for giving Alex trouble all night long.

It's a toss up 50 50....hopefully they turn it around soon...

Calling Alex Smith mediocre is a compliment, bust would be more accurate.
