If you look at batman in the comic books, there is a definite difference in the mannerisms and characters of Bruce Wayne and batman. Its almost like they are a split personality. The only Actor that comes close to achieving that Is Christian Bale. It does help that the story in batman begins was set up to accommodate this, but I do not think any of the other actors could have pulled off the physical fighting sequences and the character believability any better then him.

Adam West, of course. He was and still is Batman - belly and all.
Sure the old TV show was the height of camp - but then, so is the comic book. Besides, where else would you EVER see such wonderful villains as George Sanders, Tallulah Bankhead, and Liberace - and for heaven's sake Henry Mancini did the musical score. Nothing can compare - Holy Star-power!
Today's Batman (both in film and in print) is much, much too dark - to broody - to menacing. No one seems to really enjoy their parts - not even the villains.
Not nearly as much fun as the Batman of my childhood.
Yeah. Adam West.

My answer involves an actor you've probably never heard of, Clark Bartram: Check out the
independent, non-official short film release "Batman Dead End", the best (and most 'true' to the comic) batman in a film. Ever.

For my generation, there was only ONE true Batman and that was Adam West. It was that television series that started it all. If not for Adam West there wouldn't be any other Bat-men after him...

A tie between Micheal Keaton and Christian Bale. Both were excellent.

definitely michael keaton....nothing beats the original and when i say that i mean (adhering to your question) modern....the main reason i think so is because of all the non-animated batman characters, keaton gives us our first impression...after that, noone else who portrays him seems to be able to fill the shoes he left behind....i was disappointed when i found out he wouldnt be back for sequels

They all sucked. Adam West, as cheesy as he was (and as cheesy as the original show was) still ranks as the best Batman of all time.
