Who else thinks he will completely tank? Give a rookie this much money up front and what does he have to aspire to?! I'm predicting that he will be a complete bust, just like Ryan Leaf was in San Deigo a few years back.

Although I am a Raiders fan (since 1963) I have seen Al Davis's talent evaluation deteriorate. Although Russell may not bomb, I am of the opinion that Rookies that have never played a game at the pro level should have a 3 year contract of a set amount of dollars and see what they can do, what improvements they make over the 3 years. Guarantee money is B.S. At the end of the 3 years and if they show they are of Pro quality, then go for the big bucks.
Being a first round pick shouldn't mean anything. All it is saying is that the team with the biggest need at that position, and how he performed at COLLEGE level got him into that spot.

You ever heard of the movie "The Producers"? Well, my theory is that the Raiders found some kind of loophole like that. It's the only way I can justify all the stupid trades/drafts/contracts they put together.

All right, all jokes aside. Some of these serious answers are so far far from accurate it's just plain silly. I'm not making fun of anyone, I'm just saying there is zero facts on these "contract" comments. Here's what's up;
In the NFL, contracts are not guaranteed. Which means, a six year contract minus well be a one year contract. All that matters in the NFL is "guaranteed money". That is why Russell's contract is unique. His agents got him a lot of guaranteed money. Which means he gets paid a lump sum of money at the very beginning of each year on his contract. Most NFL contracts don't work that way. Most of the time you get a small percentage of your money up front, and then depending on how many yards/tackles/sacks/interceptions/(whatever) you get you get bonuses. Which sucks for most players. Because if they get hurt, or if another teammate excels, they don't get as much money.
As far as the true dollar amount that players get, it ain't jack. The NFL is making a ton of money. They only pay the players (all the players from every year of the NFL. That means guys that retired in 1964, and the stars of today) 40% of there expenses. EXPENSES, not profit. The owners get the rest. The players, aren't getting jack compared to the guys up in the booth. It's BS. Contracts like the one JaMarcus got (though ridiculous for a no talent ***-clown) are awesome for the League. Players should get paid more. That way little kids keep choosing to play football instead of baseball or basketball. These fatty contracts are necessary to keep the game we love alive. Now piss off, wankers. Jeez.

Top picks have been getting this type of money for several years. As of now, Russell is the most physically talented QB is the NFL. He is also kind of dumb. He will not be a complete bust like Ryan Leaf, however, he will have his hands full being productive in Oakland.

Football players careers have a shorter life span than that of baseball and basketball players. Don't get me wrong, what they make is ridiculous, but what Russell is getting is small potatoes compared to some of those guys. So everybody quit whining, let the man handle his personal business, and go out and root for your team to win, be it the Raiders or whomever. And no I don't think he'll tank like Ryan Leaf. This guy is a class act with a good head on his shoulders.

the worst part of this is, that future #1 picks will only ask for more money than this. so the NFL has to probably expand salary cap or teams have to cut more players to pay their selfish greedy unproven rookies.

He was the first pick. I do think they pay unproven players(rookies) to much money but you have to give the first player taken in the draft more then the others.

Keep in mind: One hit and he could be through! Especially with the O Line the Raiders have!

the dispute is over guaranteed money not the amount. Also NFL is a business, so it is smart to get the money now; in case he is a bust or injury.

it doesn't matter that's the standard rate for #1 overall, it's a cursed pic now you pay too much and get too little because teams that get the #1 pick need more then just ONE GREAT player.

No one that plays a SPORT for a living is worth this kind of money. And you wonder why ticket prices are out of control.
