You know, I did some research on this once and it all boils down to what time of day they die to whether or not you can actually, technically call them late or not.

Because they're dead, and if you're planning on inviting them over for dinner, or something, they won't be arriving on time. They will be late! In fact, they'll be very, very late!! So late, that it will take you dying to see them again. Then, you'll both be known as "late"! Hope this helped. Tomorrow, I'll discuss the concept of "passing on"!
