Well, the Great Compromise divided Congress into two houses. The more populated states wanted representation based on population and the less populated states wanted equal representation for all the states. It's for this reason that we have the House of Representatives, whose numbers are determined by the state populations, and the Senate, in which there are two Senators for every state.
Also, the Southern states wanted the slaves to be counted in the population, whereas the Northern states did not. According to the Three Fifths Compromise, a slave was counted as 3/5 a person in a census.

Compromise is the basis of our government. It's why we have a two party system. If we were to go to far to the right or to the left we'd no longer be democratic, but either communist or fascist.
