I would definately talk to him, because it is a woman's right to experience childbirth in whatever manner she chooses and he has no right to lie to these women just because it can inconvience the hospital staff. He is morally wrong for that and should be confronted. Let him know that if he continues it, I would report him to the hospital administration!

Sometimes it is easier to give a short answer rather than explain a policy at length which some patients may not understand. The hospital cannot "ban" a procedure. However, "not recommending" one is almost the same. I understand that your OB is not being completely honest, but for me, the answer would be the same - this hospital isn't the place for VBACS. And, by the way VBACS are very dangerous anyway. Most OB's opt against them these days. So, I would just let it drop.

If the hospital is not reccomended by the ACOG to do VBAC's, they should not do VBAC's. Think of the lawsuit they would face if something went wrong!!! It is in the best interest of the mothers and babies to be told if they want to have a VBAC, go to a ob/gyn that practices at another hospital.
So infact, as I read the question, VBAC's ARE banned by the hospital because they are not equipped to do them.

Yeah, I would say something because it's confusing then. Sure, you can ask your doctor anything. Maybe you can pose it in another way like, "I was telling my family how I couldn't have a VBAC because it's banned at the hospital, then one of my cousins said that her friend had at VBAC at that hospital...then I called the hospital just out of curiousity, and the person I spoke with said that that policy didn't exist, so I'm confused??" You don't have to come out and say, "Why did you lie?" hahaha Good Luck!

It should be voiced as something that is not done. Your hospital does not facilitate the safest environment for what is known to be a risky course of action. As a result the OBGYNs know that having vbacs is dangerous at this hospital and instead of causing arguments or insecurities they simply say its banned.
Its not a lie all together, its just a simpler way of doing things.

Sounds to me like the doctor is covering his/her rear end since the hospital does not have a 24/7 surgeon and anesthesiologist on site. It wouldn't hurt to get your doctors side of the story before deciding though. He/she should have no problem explaining the reasons to you.

VBAC's are risky, but I don't think the doctors should be lying to their patients. Talk to your doctor first and see what the explanation is; if you're still not satified, take it further.

Tell him that you know someone who works at the hospital. Tell him that they never heard of that ban. Of course he's gonna try to back himself up w/ another excuse.

I would not only bring it up to him, I would consider finding a new doctor. If he's lying about this, I would wonder what other tales he is telling.
