I'm considering installing the 64-bit version of Vista over my Intel Core Duo, 64-bit ready. Are there other considerations I should make between the 32-bit and 64-bit Vista?

Find out what hardware is installed on your computer. Then go to each of those pieces' manufacturer's websites and download updated drivers for Vista 64. If you can't find drivers for everything, that could pose a problem with running Vista 64.

First off, make sure you have a Core 2 Duo, or Pentium D, those are 64 bit, but Core Duo is not. As for considerations, check all of your peripherals websites to make sure they have Vista 64 drivers (mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner, etc.). Lastly, check any important programs to make sure they work with Vista 64. I can tell you right now, if you use iTunes, forget about Vista 64 at least for now.

As for performance gain, saying "its twice as fast" is such a ridiculously oversimplified statement of a very complex subject. To get the performanec gain, you will need not just the hardware and the OS, but 64 bit programs as well. And the gain is seldom exactly twice as much, it varies.

Go ahead and install 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate. It is recommended to install a 64-bit version because you will have twice the speed than 32-bit.
