Guess you've never studied early racing history. Barney Oldfield was the first man to average 60mph on a circular track, he was also an avowed racist. His attitude pretty much kept people of color out of racing until his death in 1948.
One of the first NASCAR (stock car back then) drivers was Wendel Scott, a former rum runner who drew large crowds not because of his driving skill but because people wanted to see them good old boys ride him into a wreck. Never happened, man was too quick.
