A major suspect here is that you are loaded down with spyware, nosy little programs that track your every keystroke and steal your machine cycles.

The same thing happened to me a few years ago until someone told me about Ad-Aware, a beautiful free program that finds and eliminates this problem. Google, download (quick), install and run it!

Another free program which can catch things that Ad-Aware doesn't is Spybot. It's also free but takes longer to download and really long to run unless you run Ad-Aware first.

I update and run both of these every week and haven't had any virus problems since. I've tried the big commercial ones and they are no better, in fact they can slow your computer down themselves if you make them active all the time.

Also, run these first or the defragmenting program will never finish. As it is, if you've never defragged your hard drive it will still probably take several hours, as in overnight.

I agree with Tricky, defragging the hard drive is a good idea. But also, open up your case and make sure that the fans and protective filters of your processor and video card are not clogged up with dust. When they can no longer cool properly they will run slow, freeze up and then shut down as a result.

one useful trick is to defragment your C drive. if you have downloaded lots of files then they get mixed up - sometimes it's worth checking if you computer needs to undertake a 'sping clean'.

if you have a pc then this is easy to do. right click on your C: drive icon (find this through the My Computer menu)

Select the Properties function on the menu that appears

click on the Tools tab

there should be a button that has 'Defragment Now' on it.

This will take you into a tool that can analyse your disk space and see if you have fragmented files. if you click on analyse it will assess the situation and tell you if you need to defragment your drive. if you do, just click on the prompt and it will work away in the background... you don't need to do anything else.... once it's completed you should notice an improvement - - - - always worth checking

Is it slow because its old or because you have a virus and spyware?
Oh, and freezing up and shutting off doesn't sound like a virus but more of a hardware issue. But a virus could make your CPU run at 100% making it overheat and shut down.
