I recently met the Tibetan Monks who live in exile in India & the most striking thing about them ,
Was the absence of hostility towards the Chinese who have taken over their country ,
Who shoot those trying to walk out to India .
Born in W V seems to have the same outlook .
People who endure such vile adversity ,
And yet somehow , their souls are not contaminated by hate are . . . amazing .
I am puzzled but in awe of all people whose reason exceeds emotion after such horrible events .

Being a black woman from WV.... I think people tend to inaccurately stereotype West Virginians. Unfortunately, these 6 individuals do not help that image at all. I hear stories every day on the news about about some form of abuse, murder or suicide. This incident, however, seemed to really hit home since it was so close to my hometown and brought back memories of bad experiences that I encountered when I would have to visit Big Creek and Chapmanville when I was in high school sports. As a black teenager, I never looked forward to the ridicule that me and my other black team mates would be subjected to when we had to go to these places. Needless to say it made my stomach and heart drop when I heard of this horrific crime against Megan. My heart goes out to her and her family. And to finally, answer the question, no... it shouldn't now have the 'Deliverance' image. Despite this act of total disregard to human life, and despite the racial hatred that still obviously exists in this town, there is still hope...if not but one person.... I thank God for the tipster who led police to Megan which no doubt saved her life.

Before I actually answer the question, I need to say that I read in total horror the story of poor Megan. What was done to this young woman is beyond comprehension of any civilized and moral person. To learn it was a group is even worse.
I applaud Megan and her mother for allowing the name and details to emerge. I wish only that I had some way to let Megan know that my thoughts, prayers, and hopes are for her complete recovery and strength for her to have a full and happy life.
Now to the question. Will the town have a Deliverance image? That really depends on how residents of the town and county and state react to this. If the population tries to make excuses and to make it seem Megan somehow brought this on herself, then in my opinion yes, they have that image. If they react in horror and do the right thing in court, then it can be considered "a festering cesspool of humanity" happened to live there and good riddance. The fact that such people exist should not be that surprising, the fact that Megan survived is a testimony to her strength and will and also to someone's (the anonymous caller's) conscience. Maybe the "tipster" is reason enough not to call Big Creek a Deliverance town.

The movie, "Deliverance", was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the article about the horrendous toture of that young woman in Big Creek, W.V.
Beginning with the description of the 'no trespassing' signs to the sullen looks on the torturers faces, I began hearing banjo music.
Why do people have to hate? It makes me want to cry. Cora

enormous Creek is a foul place......As somebody who grew up in West Virginia i'm embarrassed lower back by capacity of my homestead state. Logan County has never been a reliable place, and enormous Creek is in simple terms someplace to "be from". (e.g., October Sky movie) how are you able to write it incredibly is "in simple terms like everywhere else".....the place else have you ever been or lived? i will make it easier to be attentive to from becoming up in Wayne County, there are few places like there...different than in step with possibility jap KY. approximately everywhere is extra perfect. particular human beings stay by way of fact of kinfolk ties and the area is all you be attentive to. equivalent to important Creek people who stay racists considering the fact it extremely is how they have been raised....embarrassing. I contend that by way of fact one's father is a racist isn't any excuse so which you would be racist. particular, there are nevertheless no black persons residing in Wayne County the place I grew up, and that i'm nevertheless embarrassed by capacity of the perspective in that area once I flow to. particular enormous Creek is an incredibly backward, undesirable unusual place and you're able to be ashamed which you reside there and write on a 6h grade point. ask your self, why is there no tourism, and no new citizens desirous to flow there to stay and retire....extremely with all the actual mountain attractiveness? Is it by way of those that stay there convince themselves this habit isn't all that undesirable....as that's what their grandparents might have stated. That in a roundabout way that this lady deserved this, and there will be a snigger between the whittlers on the county courhouse in the event that they those racists get a slap on the wrist becasue she had it coming for dating a white guy.

This is disgusting and deplorable. What a wonderful opportunity to make an example out of these six idiots. And they all have court appointed lawyers, what a joke... why are we paying for their defense? Such a sad example of ignorance being passed down through generations.

Big Creek's image is much worse than 'Deliverance' - this is real life, not a movie. Six white trash hick cowards abusing a woman - yes, that will definitely put Big Creek on the map. Too bad we can't wipe it off the map.

Let's talk real. It's West Virginia it already has the Deliverance image. While in the Army I knew people from WV that experienced their first exposure to black people. WV is not known for it's diversity.

I don't think so. That kind of thing has happened before and not in West Virginia. You have to be careful no matter where you are from.

sometimes i wonder if the movies aren't giving these backwards, bigoted animals ideas. maybe not . this kind of ignorant aggression was probably learned from generations of ignorance. mother and daughter!! my God!!! these people(?) should be punished so they never harm another human being. no one deserves to go through the hell this woman went through except maybe the ones who did it. God help them, and the rest of us. there are more of these kinds around than we care to think about.
