It has nothing to do with grabbing the reader, or having to rhyme or even make sense.A great poem is a poem that comes from feelings deep inside the writer.Weather its there love life or a death or just the way the sky looks to them that day.Poetry is a way to tell people how you feel, and you let people see what you see for a brief second.I wish you the best.Good Luck

The ability to grab the reader's attention. It has to also make the reader think, and it has the move the reader. It should evoke feelings in you. It could be happy, sad, even political. The writer should have a great command of the language.
I like the ones that tell stories. There was a book I studied in high school that divided a bunch of poems into themes including love, hate and death. They have all the things I mentioned.

Reality gave a good answer. Now there are different types of poems, and also those for different ages. The first types I knew about were the ones that rhyme. I have outgrown a lot of those. I am 25. I would enjoy one where the words rhyme as long as it is not banal. It must make sense as someone said, and it must touch the reader.

It should convey a sense of meaning and feeling. When talking about poetry, in particular, the artist's intent/feeling/inspiration should be clear to the reader.
Oh, and it should be short.
I detest long, rambling poems, especially real steam-of-consciousness stuff. Makes me feel like I'm watching Eraserhead on acid.
I'll take prose, any day.
