Primates came before humans, both male and female. According to the most recent discoveries and DNA analysis, all humans descended from a single female primate in Africa - but of course she must have mated with a male primate. Is this a Chicken vs Egg type of question?
If "survival of the fittest" is the way we developed/evoled, then we are talking about an individual that was strongest, so that means, was that strongest one (a) male or (b) female?
Good Question.
I would answer (c) parents.
If one developed first without the other, that species would have died out in one generation. There had to be a couple that survived long enough to educate their babies.

I'd say a man came first, then the woman. You see, there were a few niches on the first try...so perfection wasn't achieved until the 2nd! The rest is history. Now log off, call your mother and thank her! ;-)

Well as a Christian Man came first. Adam was created and then Woman(later named Eve) was created as his companion. Really though it all depends on what you believe.
