You can use warm olive oil to soften wax in your ears my mum used to do it us when we were kids and had ear ache. You can also get thing from the chemist such as audiclean. If it's really bad you can arrange to have them syringed at your Dr's :)

I literally have to have the wax removed from my ears every couple yrs or so too. They put this basin under your ear that fits perfectly around the auricle of your ear and then the doctor flushes warm water into your ear with this thing that looks like a cake icing decorator. The flush about makes me fall over dizzy. After its over, you can look into the basin and see what all you had in your ear and try to figure out how you managed to have all that goop and crap in your ear. Then they do the other one. Its painless and actually makes you feel and hear a lot better.
I heard you can go to the chiorpracter and buy ear wax removers (candles). You put a paper plate around your ear and stick this wax remover in your ear and set the end of it on fire with a match and it pulls the wax out of your ear like a tootsie roll.

Have you ever tryed an ear candle? They work wonders. It is a long skinny cone shaped object you place the smaller end inside your ear and you burn the other end. You will need someone to help you do this. The ones that I have purchased were about 12 dollars. They have instructions on the package. You can get them at most health food stores. I purchased mine at GNC. The heat pulls the ear wax out of your ear and into the funel.
