The Star Trek universe explanation is a genetic virus accidentally created by the Klingons when they tried to genetically enhance their species. The resulting virus gave them the appearance we see in TOS but thanks to a cure for the virus within a generation they returned to their normal appearance. Klingons do not discuss this openly out of embarrassment.

...if you get an opportunity, you might want to get hold of, or rent the episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Episode 6, Season 5, entitled "Trials and Tribble-ations". In the episode, some of the DSN crew, including Worf, travel back in time, to the events depicted in the original Star Trek series' "Trouble with Tribbles" episode; once there, they meet and interact with some of the original series' crew members...and they also encounter the Klingons of that period. Obviously, the DSN crew members are perplexed, and in turning to Worf, for an explanation; he tells them, in an embarrassed and hushed tone, that "it's something about the Klingon linage, that we don't like to talk about"...
...at the time of the episode presentation, I thought that this was way too lame and convenient of an explanation...
...if anything, definitely catch this episode, sole for the fateful meeting of Captain Kirk and Captain Sisko...
...check it out, below!!!
