I have read stories on the net that you should back up your SD card first in case the computer might wipe it out, even if you have followed the manual. Or is it ok to just hit the update button?
Will the maps be improved because the ones I have tried have not been the most direct routes? I have also heard about dodgy usb connection and charging base (which I am familiar with this one).

You need the TomTom Home software, version 2. The first thing you do must be a back-up, so start with your internet connection disabled. The back-up will take the best part of an hour so have a coffee break. Then you can get the updates. The actual device's program may have a new version, there may be new voices and points of interest, there will be the QuickFix add on that speeds up finding your current location. What there won't be is a map update, that will cost you (~£70~). As a general rule don't update just because you can, only do it if you need to.

Download their software "TomTom Home" for Mac and PC and it makes it incredibly easy. You can even backup/restore your SD card before any updating. Honestly.

Mine had just lived in my car since I bought it, but a mate showed me the new software and updating couldn't be easier.
