Two days ago, my Hotpoint refrigerator began making a loud buzzing noise - similar to a hockey buzzer - when the cooling cycle begins. It lasts about 3 to 4 seconds and then quits. The refrigerator and freezer are cooling fine. What could it be? Thanks for your time.

All the above are possible reasons. Since the noise stops in 3 or 4 seconds, it may also be the starting capacitor or the starting circuit that starts the compressor. The starting capacitor circuit gives the compressor a 'kick' to get it going and then shuts off. Usually in about 3 to 4 seconds

another thing you can check is the ice maker if you have one in the freezer. If the bar gets stuck in the wrong position (like food blocking it) it will make a funny noise, like you mentioned, when the cooling kicks on. Just move the bar back to a horizontal position and it may stop the noise,

Most of the time the ice maker heating element goes out and the arms that flip the ice out struggle hard to pop the ice loose from the freezer tray./ Replace Ice Maker.

Dust collecting on the cooling fins... Clean those and under the fridge...

sounds like a vibration, could be something hitting the evaporator fan, under the fridge,
