I usually put them in the dish washer. There is actually a hat thing that you can buy that you put the hat in and then put in the dishwasher if you do not want the hat to maybe float around in the dishwasher.

Warm water and Dawn dishsoap works best. Just fill the sink half full, putting the Dawn in like you were going to do dishes. Then grab a scrub brush and scrub away. You may need to put the soap directly on any bad stains. Once it's clean, rinse it well and hang it up to dry.
I do this a lot on my boyfriend's greasy, nasty sweat-stained hats as well as my daughter's dirty, sticky juice-stained ones, and it gets them all clean. I think it works better than the dishwasher, and you don't have to worry about high heat warping or damaging the brim at all.

Well DONT put it in the washer! It will ruin the cardboard thats in the brim. The best is to use a dishpan and brush and wash the back and some of the brim-- then use a hairdryer to dry it quick.

as far as putting it in the washing machine, it depends on the cap. if its one of those cotton destroyed ones, it might be ok. if its one of those wool or authentic mlb hats or new era, do not! i've heard horror stories about dry cleaners also, only take it to them if they tell you they do know how to clean/wash it. you may just have to clean it with a clothing spot cleaner. make you you shape it when it dries also.

You could just use shout, or some laundry detergent on a damp washcloth & gently scrub it. If it's very dirty, they sell plastic hat holder things so you can put it in the dishwasher & still keep its shape. Look by the laundry baskets at Walmart.
