I like acting. I want it to be a professional career of course. I dont know where to start to get my career going. First I'm going to get my teeth straightened to braces, and then I dont know what to do - They say tog et a back-up job if acting doesn't work out for me, so should I go to university straight away for IT? Find auditions across the UK, go to drama collage? Im confused, i need opinions please.

Get a good agent.

Casting directors don't go out and beat the bushes for talent. They rely on agents to send them pre-screened potential fits for the parts they need to cast.

Things can't be that different in the UK than in the US. If they were, you 'd have asked your question in the UK forum. You start where you are, doing all the school and community theatre you can. You get a job to sustain yourself but that allows you flexibity to go to auditions. You save money and go to professional classes. You build a strong resume of experience and training, and if, after two or three years of community theatre, you are not getting the leads or first character roles, you apparently haven't got the talent to go on, but if you do, then you get a headshot and start trying to get an agent. Who they are who recommend that you get a back up job do not understand how acting works as a profession. If you have a back up job and can do anything besides acting, that is what you will wind up doing, because acting is so difficult. You will only become and actor if you have to become an actor because you can't do anything else. Most university study is a waste of time for actors, but in the UK, they tend to be better than in the US. I have been impressed by Guildhall's curriculum for actors. And I know that there are professional schools like the Old Vic that you might go straight into after high school. I think drama school after high school. Then try to become a member of a professional company. Best wishes, Doc

The answer to this kind of depends on how good you are. If you are really talented and getting out of high school, some will tell you to go straight to NYC or West End or LA, that time in school is going to be a waste for you. I used to teach high school drama and I may have seen 1 during my 5 years that I thought could skip college and get started, and she, of course, was such a good student that she WANTED to go to college and try a double major in acting and PRE-MED! You don't have to go immediately to college, either. You can try it for a while and if it doesn't work out, THEN go to college. A back-up job is almost always necessary even for good actors although your back up job doesn't have to be somethng you have to go to college for. Lots of actors work as delivery drivers, waiters, tutors, etc. when they're not acting
