I have someone who is willing to do fencing for me.... 5' cedar for $17 per foot and $180 for each gate.

I have no idea if this is cheap or not, but seems expensive... they sell the whole 8' set at home depot for like $35

We needed a 200 ft fence last year so I priced it out for the material. That price seems high but may be ok.
Each 8 inch board costs about $5 now, so thats 12 boards for every 8 feet, plus the stringers about $8 and the posts and cement, about 12 so thats about $80 for each 8 feet.
You can get a gate setup for about $80.
It's hard to make a mistake building a fence. You might get some satisfaction out of doing it yourself. Just look at someone elses fence and see how they did it.
The main problem is that board are high.

those Home Depot pre-fab fence sections are crap: cheap thin wood, stapled, etc.

fencing --correctly--is an art and it's hard work.

IF you have this guy do your fence, 1st check several of his previous jobs...look at them, just don't take someone's word over the phone.

make a contract, specifying the fact that stainless steel screws will be used (instead of nails or plain or galvanized screws); that the cedar planks are x----- inches thick by x----inches wide etc etc etc
specify that the posts will be pressure-treated 4x4 or 6x6, set in fence-post concrete every 8 feet, etc etc etc.

remember: if it's not in the contract, you don't pay for it and he doesn't provide it.

don't give him more than 10% at contract signing, and pay #1 choice by credit card (not debit card, not cash); #2 choice is by check.
after that, it's common for him to get, say, 25% more when all the fence posts go in, 25% more when the stringers go up, 25% when the boards and gate/s go up, and the balance when the job is done and you are satisfied

you should also specify that they will clean up daily, haul away any and all debris and that they will obtain any needed permits. make sure they are insured and licensed, too. (that adds to their biz expenses, so YOU pay for that...it's a cost of doing business).

if you're up for backbreaking work, do it yourself.

Putting up a fence is not an easy job. You have to dig the holes for the posts which is a pain then set them in concrete. We did our fence ourselves(my husband is a jack of all trades) and we did the whole thing for around $1700 and that was only the supplies. So to answer your question i think that $10 a foot seems more reasonable.

this is a little on the expensive side, however if it includes labor to install that could be the difference
