I very much doubt that the amount or RAM that you have will stop you from downloading something. Does your daughter really know what is going on in the computer, or is she just repeatiung something that she has heard?

I would recommend taking your computer to a PC shop, or the geek squad at best buy and talking to them about it.

Whatever you decide to upgrade, you need to make sure it is compatible with your existing system (The variety of RAM available, for example, is mind-boggling) going to Best buy or a PC shop will help ensure this.

Your daughter may be computer savvy, but, you have said, "my computer will not download a lot of things". This could be for several reasons, ie, it will not download a lot of things because you have no space left or you have a slow connection and get disconnected after a period of time and don't have a RESUME option with whatever you use to download with, etc, etc.
I would suggest you ask your daughter if you have posted the question correctly. Loosely speaking, you can download anything that is available to download provided you have the internet which of course you have and you have the software that enables you to open and view/play your downloads which windows provides and you have already.
I would say your daughter suggests an upgraded system and if you are not using at least Win 98, you should get it. XP is very cheap now (must have service pack 2 with it) and/or, if your computer is more than say..4 years old in your situation, you need another one. (Good used ones are cheap)
RAM has nothing to do with your system being able to download or "download lots of things". It could be your system is that old it doesn't have updated software that is needed, or hardware that is needed to run games and chat platforms, etc. Email me if you need further clarification.
Don't go to a shop and pay for your system to be evaluated..post it here.

RAM is fairly inexpensive and will speed the PC up, but that's not necessarily your problem. How old is the computer? And how big is the hard drive?

Try uninstalling old programs that you don't use - not by deleting though because it won't get rid of everything - go into Control panel/Add Remove Programs.

If you've a lot of photos or documents, back some up to a CD or DVD.

Run Defrag (START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS). It will take a while if it's never been done, but will help the hard drive by moving files to the start of the drive allowing quicker access and less wear.

RAM is simple to install and isn't too expensive - make sure it's the correct type (visit www.crucial.com) and slot it in. A second hard drive is quite cheap and fairly simple to install (a couple of screws, a couple of cables and making sure it's set to slave if it's on the same cable as the main hard drive or cd drive).

The problem can be a variety of different things and it depends on the things I mentioned above. You can take it to a PC shop to get it checked out - although this might not be very cheap!

Good luck.

The cost of RAM, although it used to be expensive, is coming down in price now. You have not said how much RAM you currently had or what spec it is but if you go to a PC shop they will sell RAM. I think you are looking at about £49 for 1GB of RAM these days so is not too expensive. You will need to know if it is DDR2 or DDR3 - best open up the old tower and check on the motherboard (unless you have the book that came with the motherboard as it should tell you in here what is compatable).

In order to assess what would help, you need to post your current system specification i.e type of computer - Laptop or Desktop PC, amount of ram, processor, hard drive etc.

In general upgrading ram is a good idea, however if your current system is a few years old then you might want investigate whether a new system is the answer as more ram doesn't necessarily give you more power. There are a number of manufacturers out there that do new machines on the cheap.
Go to your local dealer and have your machine looked at by a technician who can then tell you what solutions are available to you. Hope that helps.

Hmmm.. your question is pretty unclear. If you're talking about lack of power supply, buy a more powerful PSU (power supply unit)

Not enough space on hard disk? Delete off all your unnecessary files especially those in your temporary internet folder. Get this software called CCleaner. http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ It'll do the job.

Not enough RAM? Go buy 1 or 2 sticks of them. Don't cost much anyway so no worries. Make sure you buy the right *type of RAM.

Have a nice day! Hope i've managed to help you out.

more RAM!

Go to www.crucial.com and it'll identify what RAM you have and what RAM upgrades are possible. RAM isn't expensive... not for a desktop anyway! They'll quote you a price and it won't be wildly more expensive than the cheapest you can get.

But I doubt that lack of RAM is limiting what you can download. Lack of RAM will make it slow (even very slow) but it won't stop you downloading. Maybe your disk drive is full... in which case either clean it down (delete the trash) or add another hard disk. That also is not going to be expensive.

If you are not confident you can pay a shop to source and fit the parts for you... you'll probably pay more for the labour than you will for the parts!

What tuner card do you have? What USB-to-DVI do you have? what's the wattage of your PSU? what form of HDD do you have? RAM is definitely no longer your undertaking (except you have a foul module- yet i do no longer think of it fairly is possibly here) I doubt your PSU (potential supply, in case you probably did no longer understand) is the undertaking, considering which you could maximum possibly get the Blue exhibit of dying, or it could purely decrease off if that improve into the undertaking. acquire a application called SpeedFan and as quickly as you have it working bypass to the "S.M.A.R.T." tab and bypass with the aid of each and each of your stressful drives and make helpful beside status it says no blunders. Your stressful force could be failing and whenever you're doing a enormous volume of writing to the disk (alongside with recording some thing with the tuner card) it could lock up attempting to get right of entry to a sector. The clever checklist will sparkling that up. additionally use the "Readings" tab of SpeedFan to make helpful warmth isn't your undertaking, as long as not one of the reading are above like 70C (aside from the gfx card) its in all danger no longer your undertaking. My guess is that the driving force on your tuner card has a computer virus, so bypass examine on the information superhighway for an as much as date driving force. it could additionally be your USB-to-DVI adapter, so try no longer employing it and notice in case you nonetheless get the comparable undertaking. in case you do, thats in all danger no longer it. there are somewhat some diverse configurations with desktops troubleshooting can get a sprint problematical at situations.

Ram is relativly cheap. Should be less than $100.

Have a local computer shop install it for you.

While you are there, explain your problem to them and get a 2nd opinion.
