i have been plastering ceings for more yearsc than i can remember ..every body says dont do it ..thats what they said to me when i first started ....i ignored them and had a go ..found it easy ..so im going to tell you and you can decide yourself ..first you need a scaffold ..pushing around a popcrate or a workmate wont do ..the scaffold needs to be high enough that with an outstreched hand on top of your head you can touch the ceiling ..allthe joints in the plasterboards shoud be taped ..m ix the plaster to a creamy consistency and with a hawk and trowel apply a coat of plaster ..this should be done swiftly and confidently ..the first coat should be on in less than 10minutes ..let it alone for another 10 mins ..then apply the second coat ..this is called the laying down coat ..when this is on you start in one corner and start to trowel it smooth ..as it starts to set you flick on a little water...acts as lubricant to the trowel....not too much or the ceiling will bubble ..you will need to trowel it at least 5 times ..over a period of about an hour and a half ..by this time you will think you have done some serious neck damage ..but dontworry ..it will be gone in a week..your first ceiling should be no bigger than ten by ten ..or you might struggle a bit .the plaster you use needs to be board finish ....if you have an electric mixer the better ..these days i can put on a 20 by 20 ceiling and finish it comfortably on my own ..but i do need a labourer to mix the plaster ..and i do have a 20inch neck!

assuming the ceiling has been taped, bedded, and finished out, you can either spray it with 'pop corn' accoustic, or texture to match existing walls or apply a different kind of texture.
pop corn accoustic isnt used much anymore, and if it is, it shouldnt be. i encourage all customers to let me scrape it off entire ceiling and texture ceiling, rather than spraying fresh accoustic over a patch, for example. (i hate that stuff!)
crows foot is the easiest to apply because it is done with a crows foot brush and doesnt require a spray rig. other typical textures are, 'orange peel', and 'splatter drag'. all of these are extremely messy and easy to totally screw up, for a beginner. ready to hire someone yet?
if not, shoot me a email and i'll give you some instructions when i have more time. GL with it and it is a doable project but you want to get it right the first time!

If you try this yourself you will spend the rest of your life regretting it. It is sooo difficult and must be left to a pro or you will have a ceiling like a ploughed field. And doing it yourself will be more expensive as your wife will make you have it done properly when you ruin it. I know all this because I made the same mistake when young and foolish.

Hi - This is NOT a job for the faint-hearted. I spent 40 years in the construction industry and this is one job definitely best left to the professionals. They will do it faster, better, and with very little mess.
