The way I have taught the difficulty that aromatic compounds have in undergoing nucleophilic substitution is by describing how the attacking nucleophile would have to pass into the middle of the benzene ring, stop and turn by 90 degrees, and suddenly attack one of the C atoms from inside the ring.
