i dont understand how, (it seems only to be an american trend, we dont use it in the uk) when somebody gets a new boyfriend or girlfriend etc, just a regular person, no one famous, people say "im going to google him/her to find things out about them"
well how does this work, seen as most regular people are not on google?

99.99999% of the world's population are NOT on Google, or any other search engine for that matter. I've never heard the phrase but it sounds like Yuppy talk to me. I know my name appears on the Internet in a hundred or more places, but I defy anyone to do a Google and find me. It's impossible! You have to be very famous or have a very unusual name before a Google search will find you. If you're a singer, author or painter you may have a chance.

Chances are you won't find much on a person - most databases that you might want to check: criminal, medical, tax, etc. are not available to the internet.

But I did 'google' a friend and found them on a racing site where they had done some kart races.

Most folks that have 'google' hits are either noteworthy or notorious.

You just type their name into the google search engine and enter. If there has been anything about them reported anywhere, it very likely will come up.
