There's a good chance you have overstressed the peroneal tendon on the outside of you ankle, and it is inflamed (peroneal tendonitis). Its not easy to get rid of this when you are still playing sports. If it starts getting worse, you will have to stop playing if you want it to heal. In the mean time, you need to develop some habits to control the injury.
First, you need to stretch the ankle several time per day. While standing in your barefeet, stretch your ankle slowly in all directions to determine where it starts to pull. Once you have isolated the tight spot, gently stretch the ankle by holding it for about 30 seconds in the place where it just begin to pull. Do this three times on each leg, alternating legs between stretches.
After the sports activity, you need to elevate the ankle and apply ice for about 15 to 20 minutes each time you engage in the sports activity. You can wait until evening when you are watching TV or reading.
Third, take ibuprofen a half hour before playing sports, and once again about 4 hours later.

In the last 3 or 4 weeks have you just started football and soccer?
Also do you find that when you get up in the morning and start to walk, that your heel hurts to touch the ground, and gets better as the day goes by?
If yes then you could have a condition called Equinus which means you don't have the full range of motion in your ankles due to the ligaments in your calves being shorter than is normal. It's usually hereditary, and you can get inexpensive heel lifts, not heel cushions,to help elevate your ankle and relieve the pain. Taping your foot will help and I'll explain this the best way I can but seeing a podiatrist would be a good idea if you have these symptoms.
To tape:
1.Use 1/4 to 1/2 inch sport tape
2.Take the tape from the inside of your foot just below your ankle(round) bone and forward of your arch start there and pull tape around the back of your heel all the way to the same spot on the outside of your ankle.Tear off and follow next step.
3. Take tape and wrap around your foot, start on the bottom of your foot and pull tape around through your arch so that the tape is now positoned to hold the tape wrapped around your ankle on both sides.
So one should be going around your heel from ankle bone to ankle bone and the other should be going around your foot across the anlke tape and through your arches.
This will relieve the pain felt when trying to first walk in the morning if you have equinus and the pain you get when playing ball.
You probably never realized you had this problem until you needed to use the full range of motion required in the sports you play. I discovered mine when I moved into a home with stairs and suddenly couldn't put my heel to the floor in the mornings after running up and down stairs all day long.
Go see a podiatrist if you do have these symptoms, there are other things they can do to help, especially if you are going to play thes sports for a while.
Formerly_Bob sounds like a good advice if you don't have heel pain at all.
And an ankle brace, someone else suggested, is designed like the taping I explained, but you can get a tighter support wrap from the tape when needed.
If it is Equinus you will also want to avoid going barefoot very often since that will aggrevate the problem with the achelles tendon.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

since you can still be active it isn't broken or fractured. if anything id say its a sprain. just resting the ankle, putting an ice pack on it and elevating it should help.

as well as its more than one joint, and u say it does not hurt that much, and if there is no swelling or redness, we can exclude infection in joint,(arthritis,,) , it could be more systemic disease like reumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus,, espesially if u have other symptoms in other body systems..
better to refer to dr.
