I'm actually a Real Estate Agent in North Sydney, it's great here 5min to the city, harbour views etc. Pay about $350 AUD a week for a mod 1 bed apartment. Same price will get you 2 bedroom unit in the Eastern Suburbs, Bondi Junction etc. Louder over that side with a lot of English & Irish nearby at Coogee. Cheers !

hey you might want to see this link http://australia.emigratenz.org/best-sydney-suburbs.html. or if you can't find a place yet, i recommend you stay in Sovereign Inn Crows Nest even for a couple of days while looking for a place to settle. It has close proximity to business areas, shopping, dining and entertainment centres plus you won't have a hard time getting from one place to another since public transports are always available there. you don't need to worry about spending huge because hotel accommodation there is really affordable.

Glebe and Newtown just west of the city are great suburbs to live in. They have a village atmosphere and are generally safe places. Sydney University is between them.
Look at the classified advertisements in the Sydney Morning Herald on a Saturday - http://www.smh.com.au - to compare rental prices in different suburbs.
