With laws relating to marriage being codified and the govt. and judiciary playing an active part in deciding when and how any spouse can end a marriage or how people have to conduct themselvs in marriage, marriage is no more a sacrament it has all the overtones of a civil contract with codified laws which tell you how to enter into it, how to end it, how to calculate damages, when it is valid or void, practically everything about marriage is governed by statute so there is nothing which makes people feel that it is sacred like your belief in religion, your customs or traditions etc.
It has in todays modern society been reduced to a civil contract when once upon a time it was in fact and in law a purely sacramental institution governed purely by religion and not by codified statute.

Since marriage from long ago suffered the same pit falls that we face today I would say that marriage was never sanctified. Back then people weren't perfect (hell,we still aren't), but people back then had no options for recourse. Divorce was unheard of even if it was completely justified.
Marriage is a socially made idea. It is only held together by the convictions of the couple. If it is important to the couple the marriage will most likely survive.

They are supposed to, if you take your vows seriously. There are still situations where divorce will happen, but it really should be the exception and not the rule. I am a divorced woman remarried to the man of my dreams. (he too is divorced, but both only after 17 yrs of marriage.) We are determined to make it work in spite of the challenge of five kids combined and dealing with ex's etc.
If you are in the market for a mate, just try to find someone with the same values. Don't be afraid to discuss it once you get serious or you will never know.
Good Luck

A little but the government has become substitute husband. It has more cash and will never be out of work. So, what's a prostitute [who's posing as a wife] to do? Well, she'l go with the money and forsake her vows. Welcome to the western world.
Don't ask why the west is giving birth to such low numbers. The very land is sick of whores. Vomiting them out.
Not saying they're all whores, but huge numbers are.

Marriage is sacred, it is the people that get married that don't respect it most times. For this reason many already think that marriage is a waste of time.

Whether society at large holds marriage in sanctity, be certain that many married people DO hold their marriages as such, and God certainly does as well.

Marriage is old and outdated....lol. Tell that to people working in the wedding industry. They have business coming out of their ears.
Your marriage is what you make it. If you invest the time and energy into working on your marriage to keep it strong you will reap the rewards. People today throw in the towel too easily in my opinion.
Hmmm....my answer gets 2 thumbs down.......very interesting.

The word marriage itself means nothing, without the conviction of the people promising to uphold it.

It still can, but whether it does or not depends on the people in the marriage and their attitudes.

They do to me. Most people never take them serioiusly, though. That's a little upsetting to me because I think that is the most sacred bond between two people.
