In July I vacationed with my daughter in Kenya. We saw the zebra/wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara National Park, and then visited Amboseli, Tsavo and Nakuru National Parks. It was fantastic.

In August I went hiking in Peru's Cordillera Blanca. I did the Santa Cruz trek, which reaches 15,500 feet in altitude. The mountains, many of which are around 20,000 feet, were most impressive.

Each year we head off to Honolulu for a week. Since our eldest dauther is a flight attentdant with a major airline, the air travel is free. I also book us at the Navy Lodge at Ford Island. It's away from all the hub-bub of Waikiki, inside a military compound with an armed guard at the gate and quite close to my wife's favorite spot: Aloha Stadium. Three days a week, in the parking lot of the stadium, is the world's biggest flea market. Over 4,000 stalls selling clothes and other things.
We also have our favorite places to eat and re-visit. One seafood place, the Captain's Table, is off the Nimitz Highway as you enter the Ala Wai Canal area on the way to Waikiki. It sits on a pad in the middle of a parking lot, just off the piers which hold the fishing fleet. Doesn't look like much from the outside. But, the interior decor is spectacular and the food is first-rate. Another one is the gourmet restaurant at Hale Koa. That's the military resort in Waikiki also known as Fort DeRussy. Yet another is one of the secrets not known to tourists. Up the street behind the Ala Moana shopping mall is the Ala Moana office building. At the top, on the nineteenth floor, is a revolving restaurant where you can sit and have lunch while enjoying a panaromic view of Oahu.

My partner and I have been together for four years. When we were married to other people, neither of us had been on vacation for years because our spouses were both stay-at-home types ( well mine was actually a couch potato to put it mildly ! In 30 years we had one vacation ). So...when we got together we decided to really make up for all that lost time.
We made a list of "places we want to see before we die", and in these four years we've been to Norfolk Island (where the mutineers from the Mutiny on the Bounty ended up), fascinating place ! Then to Tasmania to track down some family history places (my partner is descended from a convict who was sent there from England).
Then last year, we took the big plunge and went to England for a month of driving and seeing all the fascinating historical sites....absolutely wonderful. Then we went over to France, then by train to Italy. We visited Paris, the valley of the Somme where my grandfather was killed in WW1, then down to Nice and Monaco. Then across to Florence, Venice, Rome, and down to Pompeii and The Isle of Capri. The experience of actually "being there" was fantastic and never to be forgotten.
This year...in four weeks time actually...we take off for Egypt for three weeks of immersing ourselves in the fascinating land of the Pharoahs. This is the most exciting destination yet!
We are not wealthy by any means, we just set our goals each year, and then work like beavers to pay for these trips. I work two jobs (I'm 58) and he works one , at age 68, but we enjoy working when there is a special goal at the end of it.
When we get home, I make up collages of our photos, postcards, and souvenirs like coasters and admission tickets, etc. I've framed these, and they are all on the wall of our kitchen. So every day when we're chopping the vegetables or washing the dishes, we look at our wall of memories, and have a reminisce.
There are a few more spaces on the wall...next year we'll be taking off for China, as long as our energy levels hold up !
