Moving from Switzerland to California, am I better off selling them here and buying again in the states? I've heard it's not worth the hassle.

Especially for California, it is probably not worth the hassle. They have the highest environmental standards in the country and may require that you bring the car up to standards before you can register it there - which can cost hundreds to thousands.
Unless the vehicles are classics with terrific value, it would seem best to get the best price in Europe and carry the money (or the deposit slip) to California.

It will cost about 2500 euro to put your car on a ship, NOT inside a container always. That might be even more expensive.
If your car is less than 5 years old, then you will be in competition with new car dealers, and have to pay a big import tariff for "new "cars. Cars less than 5 years old must also comply with all USA emmisions and safety laws. Also see next paragraph.

If your car is more than 5 years old, you will be able to import it easier, BUT what octane petrol is recommended? 98? 95? In the USA we have 87, 89, 91, 93 octane. Your engine will perform differently, I can't explain why, but noisy and less powerful? Diesel car? Diesel costs as much as petrol in the USA.

Are you an American with a driving record already established in the USA? NO? I am American, but have not driven in the USA for 16 years. I was shocked to learn that no insurance company will honour my 16 yr. good driving record in Belgium. They want to start me off in the high-risk category, for 3 times the price of my American friends.

I have no experience with motorcycles, except to say that ALL must have the headlight CONSTANTLY turned on at all times. An "off" switch may not be permissable.

in short... not worth the hassle. Ask your Swiss insurance man to recommend and American affiliate to insure you.

Sell them, the expense of having them certified in the US is not worth the hassle, some vehicles are almost impossible to modify to meet the US specifications.

Can I hide in your suitcase and come to California with you?

I used to live in Glendale, just outside LA for about 3 years, and besides the cost of living, CA is great!

Is the stress and headache worth the effectiveness of cost? I'd say just buy a new one and sell yours there. I brought my 318i from Belgium to Texas - Lots of papaer work, fees, headaches, and emission upgrades. You name it - chi-chin!!!!$%$$$ - In the end I should have left it there... It depends on how much you "love" your machine.... THAT will make a difference in your decision...

Ball park £2-3000, plus registration and taxes. remember secondhand autos interior the U. S. are costlier than they're here, so which you will no longer get something properly worth having for under £10k.

By the time you pay for shipment you will be able to buy another one. Most vehicles now pass Ca. air standards before they are out of the plant(s).

you'd be better off doin that. unless it is just some kind of rare vehicle. other wise the cost of shipping on something like that will kick you in the butt.
