I'm a beginner so I don't know how to come up with the patterns yet but I need things that look better then the books you see in sewing stores.

Take some pictures from magazines or catalogs of clothes that you like and go back to the fabric store. If you really look at the different pieces, you will find that the patterns are similar, just not made up in the type of fabrics you would use for clubbing. Also, trims, buttons, and changes of sleeves, necklines, and hem lengths of the basic fabric store patterns can change them into anything you could possibly want. Visualize a "boring" pattern made in hot fabric, with snazzy buttons and a shorter skirt. Sewing is two parts inspiration and three parts work. The previous writer is correct; learn to sew first, with the commercial patterns, then start changing the patterns to suit you. It is great fun!

Try some of the independent pattern companies (poke around on http://www.patternreview.com) and browse magazines like sew stylish and Burda World of Fashion.

You're not going to see clothes exactly like you're seeing in clubs... remember it takes about 6 months or more to get a new pattern out in the books. However, you can learn to analyze clothes you want to copy and how to take a basic pattern and transform it into what you want.

You need to make clothes from store-bought patterns first so that you can learn how to sew. After you learn how to sew, you will be able to figure out what to do to make the patterns look like the clothes you want to wear.

burdastyle.com has plenty of modern young and stylish patterns. Most of them are free for download in print at home PDF format. The instructions, also down-loadable are easy to follow and you can make a fun and fashionable wardrobe with their styles. I've made a couple items from the site, the "maddy" top and the string bikini for my son's girlfriend.
