The anniversary of 9/11 inspired this question, and it always brings one song in particular to mind for me. Days after the tragedy I had a PowerPoint slide show forwarded to me from a friend (I'm sure it has been in everyone's inbox, and probably more than once) that had photos from the Trade Center and Pentagon attacks and Enya's "Only Time" playing over it. From that point on, hearing that song takes me right back to that day, and brings back the very sad memories of it.

Do you have a song that always brings back memories of a time, person or place to you? Good or bad?

jmikep69 -
1. Getting married on St. Pat's...VERY cool!
2. I don't hear that Slaughter song a lot, but I will never listen to it the same way again. :)

Suzanne - 18 HOURS?!? The thought of that scares me, and I haven't even had 5 minutes of labor!

That was very sweet when you sang to her, though. :)

lovnrckets - yes, it was a LONG day...even for those of us who were just observing. Can't imagine what those who went through it, or those who lost friends and family in it, cope with it.

And 311 brings back memories of Cleveland for me too - I listened to them quite a bit there.

MachPen - I do remember the wax flutes!

Bobo - I'm so, SO sorry to hear that. I can't imagine what you & your family went through, and what you go through on a daily basis. Even though I can't relate, I believe what is said about the loss of a child being the most profound loss one can experience. :'(

BuzzKill - I have MANY songs that have been tattooed in my mind because of relationships with boyfriends that went south, so I can relate. *GRRR*

My wife was in labor during the attacks on 9/11. Strange day for us, but more a happy day with JP joining the ranks. Party tonight, although it will be somewhat subdued.

The Waterboys have a song 'Fisherman's Blues' that makes me cry, or almost cry, everytime I hear it. That song, with the fiddle and vocals, is the most expressive of the feeling I currently have regarding my little son Matthias. His 4th birthday is coming this month. We burried him 20 days later, with the cause of death being labled SIDS - meaning 'they' have no idea why he died.

I wish I was a fisherman
tumblin' on the seas
far away from dry land
and it's bitter memories
castin' out my sweet line
with abandonment and love
no ceiling bearin' down on me
save the starry sky above
with light in my head
with you in my arms...

John Waite - "St. Patrick's Day" - Even though it's a fairly new song, it will always be associated with my wedding day, because my wife and I were married on St. Patrick's Day. Also, the lyrics (give or take a few) are a pretty damned good symbolic picture of how we met.

Aerosmith - "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" - Again with the wedding day... it was "our" song.

The Isley Brothers - "Shout" - That song will always be drunken Thursday nights in the fraternity house from my college days..... "GATOR!"

Slaughter - "Fly To The Angels" - Bad story... these guys were opening for Kiss back in 1990... my first concert. Anyway, when the song started, the girl standing in front of me turned around, grabbed my crotch, and asked if she could.... well.... let's just say that the song brings back some great "oral" memories.

David Lee Roth - "Yankee Rose" - It was the song playing in the background when I lost my virginity.

That was one seriously F-ed up day. I am trying to remember what was getting heavy play around that time. I seem to recall Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in my changer, so it might forever be associated with 9/11, at least in my mind. Some happier associations:

My LIfe With the Thrill Kult - Sex on Wheels - Reminds me of my vacation to Disneyland and Hollywood Blvd. I think I saw the rest of LA as well. :-)

Michael Jackson - Bad - Yeah, not one of my favorites, but this was getting a ton of play around the time I started college.

311 - Transistor - Just released and one of the few things I can recall from that wild weekend in Cleveland.

Def Leppard - Love Bites - An appropriate song for the time. I was going through a really difficult break up. The early ones always hurt the worst.

I always think of November 11 2005 when I hear When I get Where I'm Going by Brad Paisley/Dolly Parton b/c that is the day my Dad was taken from us. The worst day of my life.

On to the happier days Don't want to miss a thing and way way back You are My Sunshine both when the two lights in my life were born.

Yeap. Let's see:

When I was thinking about getting a divorce I heard Toby Keith's song "Its a Little Too Late" on the radio, I thought it fit good. "Its a little too late, I'm a little too gone, A little too tired of this hangin' on"

Then the day day my ex left (the country) I first heard the song "My Drinking Problem Left Today" by Hank Williams III. No song could have fit more perfect and it really made me laugh. Hank sings about how the person he was with was driving him to drinking, I could really identify with that! "My drinkin' problem left today. She packed up all her things and walked away."

On a sadder note, I will forever associated the song "Heaven Can't Be Found" with my mom dying. I had always thought it was a bit of a sad melody, but even more so when I was playing it on the car radio and she started to cry because she said she could picture my dad and I acting like in the song it torn me up. "I don't know if I can go on without breaking down. I looked all over Hell, but my Heaven can't be found."

Happier note: Just about any Rockin Roll song from the 50's makes me nostolgic and happy. Songs like "At the Hop" and "Rockin Robin", or any Buddy Holly songs (Buddy Holly was my favorite.)

Crazy on you by heart, age 16, everytime I hear it I'm that age again (wish I could be) Funny you should mention 9-11, that's the day my grandson was born and when I asked my son if he realized that he was having a baby on that day, he just said it's all good. So, only good things will happen to Danny.Hope and pray for that.I have a book that shows all the newspapers from around the world and what happened that day, my Daughter had just gone to an eye appt. and I was in a cab with my mom and the cab driver said one of the towers had just gone down, my daughter was having her birthday the next day so this is one thing I NEVER will forget.

In terms of 9/11, I always think of Live's "Overcome", as someone created a remix with audio clips from the day's events, and that version circulated on the web pretty quickly.

Otherwise, I have a lot of (mostly) good memories tied to the Black Crowes' 'Amorica' album. I was living in Southern California at the time, and having a very good time.

I've been meaning to ask this question, too!! It does seem that most of my life's high and low moments have had a soundtrack to them. Well, here they are. These are just very random:

"Babe" by Styx -- a very early, happy memory of my sister and I getting ready for my mom to take us Halloween /Trick or Treating (I was 4, she was 5) and we were listening to my aunt's '70's portable radio. I remember chewing on an orange peppermint wax pan flute, too while listening to that song. Remember those wax pan flutes??

"The Flame" by Cheap Trick...when I hear this song, I remember the day that one of our little friends from 5th grade drowned over the Memorial Day Weekend. I remember showing up to class that Tuesday, and hearing the news...it seemed so surreal to me. Cheap Trick was on heavy rotation thta summer, even now, 20 years later, I still associate "The Flame" with his memory.

"Optimistic" by Radiohead always, always reminds me of a rainy summer in L.A., and of getting stuck in 101 traffic at 3 p.m.
It still makes me smile.

For some reason, I associate the song "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits, to my one-year wedding anniversary in Venice in 2001, even though it's an '80's song. The day turned out to be a not-so-romantic occasion...and it's sad to say that those lagoon waters were looking very tempting.

As for your question regarding 9/11, I recall being in Germany at the time, and having a sense of guilt for sitting in my living room thousands of miles away, and watching all of this go down. I recall that life, even on that side of the hemisphere was never the same either, after that day. The song that was on heavy rotation at the time was "Cosas de la vida" by Eros Ramazzotti, a duet with Tina Turner.

Great question!

I have a few

"Patience" By Guns and Roses- rocky time in high school with a guy....we will leave it at that- but it brings back bittersweet memories and I do love that song

"In Your Eyes" By Peter Gabriel- saw that movie at the theater and Iwas eating popcorn. The guy I was with decided to kiss me without warning with popcorn in my mouth! Gross! But it happened so fast I could push him back for a second! LOL! It happened at the scene where John Cusack was holding the tape player- OMG! I was so embarrassed...

"Love Song" By Tesla- that was my song with our group of girls in high school. Great Memories!!

"My Heart Will Go on" Celine Dion- my wedding song

"Rocky Raccoon" The Beatles- My dad used to play that for us when I was growing up

The whole Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson- another album my dad used to play for us growing up- that is a great album with a great story

During 9/11 I was listening to the am radio show in Detroit- Drew and Mike and they stayed on the air into the afternoon- I couldnt turn them off, they were comforting that morning. It was scary that day.

I didn't think about it, but just yesterday I heard "Only Time" by Enya, and it also reminds me of 9/11. So does "Overcome" by Live. "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback kinda does to because I remember the album came out on the day the twin towers fell.

I don't usually associate songs with events, but I do associate albums with points in my life. For example, Live's "Throwing Copper" and NIN's "Downward Spiral" remind me of being in junior high. Perfect Circle's "Mer de Noms" and Deftones' "White Pony" remind me of the summer of 2000 when my first love and I broke up. You get the idea.
