Seriously. They should sign one of these 1200 pound morbidly obese. All he would have to do would be sit down on the ice. He would be able to block the entire goal.

I am sure at some time or another some coach somewhere has tried something like that but if you understand the dynamics of goaltending, no one is big enough to cover ALL the net and a good goaltender needs to be mobile, especially side to side. The theory you propose sounds great but , lol, would really never work.

Obviously you don't know how accurate these NHL snipers are. Even a 1200 man wouldn't cover the entire 6X4 goal. All a shooter needs is a corner or gap, and the 1200 pound man wouldn't be able to move to stop it. Easy goals. Besides, the guy would probably have a heart attack, and the insurance on a guy like that and the crane needed to get him on the ice would not make it very cost-effective.

Remember the Saturday Night Live skit when Wayne Gertzgy was the host? Someone mentioned why they didn't have little people as goalies who hold big boards instead of sticks. I know it has nothing to do with an obese man being goalie but the logic seems the same.

There are restrictions.

You can be as large as you want but when there are restrictions on size of your pads, you're obese flesh is going to be extremely exposed; how many slap shots do you think you can take at 90-100+ mph before you have to leave the ice screaming in agony... you ever notice how most defensemen tend to leave the ice after they block a shot for a minute or two to recover... theres a good reason for that.

That and while I can imagine someone that large blocking most of the lower net, I doubt they could do too well to protect the upper corners (too slow reflexes)

Because you have to be mobile to play goalie, despite the fact that you don't move around as much. Besides, that would just make the NHL expand the net, effectively negating the giant goalie.

Ed Belfour isn't obese, dude. He's one of the most in-shape men I've ever seen who is in their 40s. Well, it's all been said, just wanted to add that I pictured David Ortiz in net in accordance with your logic. Hey, it really wouldn't be much different than him playing baseball: he'll sit around and move as little as possible anyways.
