I don't think the internet is addictive per se. I think the internet is a vehicle that allows us to easily access those things that we are addicted to. whether that be gambling, socializing, games, porn, news. A counterpoint that you could look into is how or in what ways has the internet or what role has the internet played in the progressive nature of addiction in people. like say in the past with certain things there is a limit. like say socializing eventually one party gets tired or you eventually have to stop and go seperate ways. but with the internet you can have multiple conversations with people 24/7 and never leave the computer never leave the room. someone ends a conversation you got another one lined up. like chain smoking. If you know an addict. they will do whatever it is constantly and won't stop until something dramatic happens: run out of money(although then they could rob or other things), jail, death ect. the fact that the internet is always on and never stops perpetuates the endless cycle of getting that next fix to satisfy the addiction to gambling, porn, socializing ect.

different reasons for different people. For me I am a tech major. I have 2 computers, one ipod, latest cell phone, I type and text throughout the day. It is a way to socialize quickly over a vast range without having to leave my home or desk at work...I can research continuously and communicate at will. I love to talk in person so this is a way of talking to many....and how else can you know the thoughts and views of 100's or in some cases 1,000's of people in a given day! It may be somewhat of an addiction BUT I would rather have a "legal" addiction than an "Illegal" one. Side note: I do not let it interfere with work, relationship etc. some people do and that is when it can become a serious problem!

Well, basically, my job revolves around computers.
But one thing that really interest me is the vast knowledge that the Internet offers. It's all in there. I don't need to browse all those big books with funky smell (sometimes). With just a touch of a button all the information you want and need to know are there. Whether it's just to satisfy your curiosity or with something that you really need to know. Even information you don't want to know, it's all there.
And not to mention, the people I get to meet. I'm not really a people's person but in the internet I could talk to them without thinking "Am I making a fool out of myself". It's just a friendly and casual conversation. I think it has something to do with you don't see their faces and they don't see yours. (I'm not also a webcam person and NO! I don't have any personal issues. I just like my privacy).

It is kind of like crack.

Especially when people get involved in something like 'World of Warcraft' or 'Second Life'.

It can be unhealthy - mainly due to sitting and eating junk food and staring at a screen (TV is bad too). It can affect your job (if you waste time online instead of doing your work - or get fired due to wasting time online), it can also make people anti-social and depressed.

I don't blame the internet though - I blame people.
